Helen Adelaide Lamb Design Panel for Auction @ Lyon & Turnbull * 19 August 2013

Lot 82 at Lyon & Turnbull's auction on 19 August 2013 with an estimate of £800 - £1,200 is a framed embroidered panel of around 1909 measuring 57cm x 33.5cm. The design closely resembles one by Helen Adelaide Lamb that appeared in The Studio - An Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Art, Volume Forty Six . Helen was born in 1893 to Thomas R Lamb, stockbroker, and Agnes Cook of Broompark, Prestwick, Ayr. At the early age of 15 she was accepted as a student by Glasgow Art School and later went on to teach art at St Columba's School, Kilmacolm between 1918-1949. She was commissioned to produce the Church of Scotland's Loyal Addresses to King Edward VIII, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, all of which are conserved in Windsor Castle. She died in Dunblane in 1981 and in the cathedral there is an octagonal room on the ground floor named in recognition of her outstanding artistic contribution to the cathedral. She is most famous for her contribution to the Scottish embroidery revival in the early 20th century. For more details about Helen see John Hopper's excellent textile blog.
