Europe Map Sampler @ Auction 19 June 2013

I see a fair few samplers with maps of the British Isles but samplers of Europe and the World are much rarer works so I was delighted to see this example - Lot 723 - for auction by Cheffins on 19 June 2013. It is dated the year Napoleon embarked on his ambitious and soon to be disastrous campaign against the Russians, December 1st 1812. Set in an oval cartouche, it was worked by M. Graham. The British Isles are delightfully girdled at the waist with Scotland of equal size to England and Wales, Finland has yet to come into independent existence and Caffa on the Black Sea awaits the ignition of politics that would lead to the Crimean war. The estimate for this sampler is £200 - £300. Click here for more details.

Lot 201 for auction at Chorley's on 20 June is a framed needlework sampler worked by Mary Wallace circa 1820 measuring 30.5cm x 25.5cm (12" x 10"). The Upper large archaic band, the birds perched on the fountain and the name mark this out as probably a Scottish sampler, even without the prominent display of family initials. The estimate is £80 - £120. For more details, click here.

Also at Chorley's is Lot 203 - a framed needlework sampler dated 1834, measuring 42cm x 30.5cm (16.5" x 12"). Its estimate is £150 - £200. For more details, click here.

Lot 788 is for auction on 18 June at Keys Auctions. it is a mid 19th century sampler worked in brightly coloured silks, and is possibly of German origin. It is indistinctly signed and dated 1851 and has an estimate of £40 - £50. For more details, click here.

Lot 795 is for auction on 19 June at Dominic Winter auctions. It is an embroidered linen sampler by Nancy Hawkes, Work’d at Mrs Tombs’s School, Winchcomb, and is early 19th century. Winchcombe is a delightful town centered around famous Sudeley Castle, just on the edge of the Cotswolds. There are two other samplers included in this lot. One by Mary Williams, Birtsmorton, February 16th, 1826, and another similar, by Leah Bush, aged 8, 1819, which is worn with loss. The estimate for all three is £100 - £150.
